Seaton Tramway Terminal

NEW VISITOR ATTRACTION, DEVON

OUR ROLE

Greenway Associates were commissioned as quantity surveyors by Seaton Tramway to be part of the consultant team assigned to develop and deliver their new tram terminal building. Mark Greenway and Jared Mensah were our project team.

THE PROJECT

The new Tram Terminal is located at the Seaton end of the delightful south Devon heritage tramway. The new building is home to four new platforms and these provide excellent opportunity for the charity to display some of its famous heritage trams. The project included significant track engineering and overhead cabling works, a cafe and gift shop together with brand new interpretation providing a more immersive visitor experience.

Ray Hole Associates were the project architects and Peter Robb Associates were the project managers for the track engineering works and visitor interpretation.

PROJECT CHALLENGES & ACHIEVEMENTS

The site occupies a busy and prominent location in Seaton. The building, although relatively small, required the careful coordination of several diverse sectors of the construction industry, namely bespoke architectural design, civil and track engineering works plus interpretative design and display. Track and overhead power lines works needed to be installed by engineering contractors within the main contractors own site and at the same time access needed to be afforded to fit out contractors to allow them to complete the interpretative design installations. And all this needed to happen in time for the terminal to be open, up and running ready for the key summer trading season.

Given the site proximity to the sea, all specifications had to be reviewed with regard to their suitability for a marine environment.

The Client’s budget and timetable were tight and expectations, understandably, were high. This required the creative management and packaging the works to maximise coordination but minimise costs.

The end result is a gem. The Seaton Tramway Terminal deservedly gained an “Outstanding Achievement” award at the Heritage Railway Association annual awards ceremony.
